Automated Development Template Repositories: Github Actions and Efficient Project Template Practices
1. Github Actions:
2. Github Copilot Agent:
1. Zig
2. Rust
webauthn-helper

luci-app-2fa
luci-app-webauthn
- Use this template:
copilot-instructions.md开始构建代码。
Actions
The automated programming features of the Copilot Agent involved in this project require enabling the Github Copilot service and may incur related costs.
Introduction
In modern software learning and development, “environment setup” is often the culprit for dampening development enthusiasm. Recently, I have been obsessed with Github Actions, using cloud tools to directly build, test, and deploy projects, completely bidding farewell to the pain of repeatedly setting up environments on my local machine. Through simple .yml workflow configurations, I can build for different systems and different compiler versions, achieving true “environment-agnostic” development. Compared to the past where installing a dependency library could take half a day, the clean, isolated, and on-demand runtime environment provided by Actions ensures that each build starts from scratch, completely avoiding “mysterious bugs” caused by historical baggage.
Not only that, combining with the currently popular Vibe Coding mode, I have preset copilot-setup-steps.yml and copilot-instructions.md, enabling the Github Copilot Agent to achieve fully automated programming in the cloud. This “out-of-the-box” experience means I only need to clearly describe requirements; the rest—code implementation, unit testing, and even multi-platform deployment—can be safely entrusted to the AI Agent and automated pipelines.
Even when facing unfamiliar high-performance languages or frameworks, I no longer have that “mental burden.” With the help of this automation chain, I can skip the tedious local setup process and dive directly into core logic development, achieving a quantitative leap in development efficiency. To make it easier for myself and others to quickly start new projects, I have encapsulated the commonly used development environments into several universal project templates.
Core Principles
1. Github Actions: The “Execution Muscles” in the Cloud
Github Actions allows us to code our development workflows. Whether it’s a code push (Push), creating a PR, or a scheduled task, it can trigger preset task sequences. Its powerful ecosystem of plugins (Actions Marketplace) lets you easily create complex operations, from “cross-compiling Rust” to “automated UI testing,” just like building with blocks.
2. Github Copilot Agent: The “Scheduling Brain” in the Cloud
If Actions are the executors, then the Github Copilot Agent is the brain. By configuring guidance files in the project, we can:
- Customize the Agent Environment: Pre-install specific compiler versions (like Zig/Rust) or specific CLI tools.
- Inject Domain Knowledge: Inform the AI of your architectural preferences, commenting style, and mandatory testing standards through instruction files.
This combination of “AI Orchestration + CI/CD Execution” elevates AI automation from simple “attempts at understanding” to the level of “write -> test closed-loop.”
Recommended Project Templates
All templates below integrate CI/CD pipelines and support one-click Release builds via tag pushes. To ensure long-term evolution, templates by default include sync-template.yml to enable synchronization with the upstream repository. If you want the project to be completely independent, you can directly delete this file.
As I currently have no development needs for MacOS, the adaptation priority for MacOS in these templates is relatively low, and some templates may not yet support the MacOS environment.
1. Zig Project Template: The Pioneer of High-Performance Development
- Core Logic: Optimized for Zig language’s elegant build system (build.zig), supporting cross-platform cross-compilation.
- Automation Advantage: Built-in automated testing and static analysis. Even if you don’t have the Zig compiler installed locally, you can validate code memory safety and performance through cloud Actions.
2. Rust Project Template: The All-Rounder for a Wide Range of Platforms/Architectures
- Core Logic: Deep integration of
cargo/crosstoolchains; usescargofor popular platforms andcrossfor niche platforms. Supports build capabilities for nearly all architectures/platforms (including riscv/Loongson, etc.). - Automation Advantage: Rust compilation is typically slow, but the template uses caching mechanisms to accelerate builds in cloud Actions.
Example Project:
webauthn-helper
3. Web Frontend Template: The Rapid Vibe Coding Starting Point
- Core Logic: Designed for building modern web applications with the combination of playwright + mock, providing the agent with closed-loop detection capabilities.
- Automation Advantage: Built-in multi-environment configurations (Dev/Prod), supports one-click deployment to GitHub Pages. Due to detailed type definitions, the Copilot Agent’s code generation accuracy is extremely high under this template.
4. OpenWrt Plugin Template: “Dimensional Reduction” for Embedded Development
- Core Logic: Specifically designed for LuCI plugins, supporting ucode/Lua (Note: the luci community is now fully transitioning from Lua to ucode). Includes the standard directory structure and example code for OpenWrt plugin development, significantly lowering the entry barrier. Contains template code for the entire development, build, signing, and publishing pipeline. After creating a tag locally and pushing it, it automatically publishes a Release and supports publishing to a custom opkg source (GitHub Pages).
- Automation Agent Advantage: Integrates Playwright + Docker automated UI testing. In OpenWrt’s highly fragmented firmware environment, manual testing is extremely painful. Through cloud-simulated environments, it enables AI to autonomously modify -> debug.

How to Get Started Quickly?
Just three steps to begin your automated development journey:
- Use this template: Click the green button in the upper right corner of the template repository to create a new repository of your own.
- Activate the AI Agent: If you want to try “writing only requirements, not code,” ensure the Copilot feature is enabled. On the GitHub page, open the Copilot Agent dialog and input your functional idea. The Agent will automatically start building code based on
copilot-instructions.md. - Monitor Actions: Whenever you or the Agent submits code, Github Actions will trigger automatically. You only need to watch for the green checkmarks on the
Actionstab and leave the rest to the cloud.
Automation and vibe coding are not about “being lazy”; they are about freeing limited energy from repetitive work and redirecting it towards truly core logic and creative work.
